Collection Story
Origin
The Heracleum family began as one of Bertjan Pot's material experiments. He wanted to light many LEDs at once and tried bundles of electrical wires shaped into a branch structure, but the design would have needed too much soldering. Moooi founder and creative director Marcel Wanders proposed ELECTROSANDWICH: two layers of isolation and conductivity coated onto the structure, with the conductive layer powering the LEDs. The first design, the Heracleum Suspended, was introduced by Moooi in 2010.
Design Language
Slender branches end in leaf-shaped lenses reminiscent of the Heracleum flower, a meeting of nature and technology. Pot himself has said the Heracleum is more about math than nature for him, and that he likes a product to carry more than one story. The family branches out in straight lines, hangs in circles and forms square geometric shapes. Moooi has modernised it as Heracleum III, with new LEDs and a new driver that dims to dark and works with DALI, Casambi, 0-10V and Zigbee 3.0, in White, Copper, Nickel and Green.
