Description

Moving monoshell

Studio 7.5 shaped Zeph Stool around a kinematic monoshell that provides a balanced recline without manual adjustment. The five-star base swivels and the seat height adjusts pneumatically.

Textile options

The molded shell can remain uncovered or accept a tool-free 3D Knit seat pad or unibody. Herman Miller states that the knit uses 50% post-consumer recycled polyester and is produced with zero fabric waste.

Dimensions

The fixed-arm version is 24.2 in wide, 18.9 in deep, and 39.1–47 in high, with seat height adjusting from 24.2 to 32.1 in.

Story

Animating a shell stool

Studio 7.5 used repeated 3D-printed prototypes to make a shell form move with the sitter. Its geometry uses the body’s pivot points as a counterbalance, creating recline through the shell rather than a separate set of user controls.

Fewer parts, interchangeable layers

The underlying shell can work alone or receive a removable textile layer. A seat pad clips around the seat, while a unibody wraps the seat and back; both can be added or exchanged without tools.
