Story
The original version
Vitra says the original version of the Panton Chair, with a glossy lacquer finish, is still marketed today as the Panton Chair Classic.
Back in production
After the thermoplastic version was discontinued, Vitra resumed production in 1990 in rigid polyurethane foam, which needs complex finishing but resists breakage better than the thermoplastic. Wikipedia dates the Classic's return four years after the 1979 stop; Vitra's own date is 1990.
