Overview
Nonaro (Azucena) sits in B&B Italia's outdoor chairs list with the date 1959 and credited to Luigi Caccia Dominioni. The maker says he designed the Nonaro chairs for Milan's Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, where people wanted to sit and gaze at one of the museum's prize possessions, a cartoon by Raphael.
Construction
The sheet lists painted metal for the frame and mesh. The cushion is shaped polyurethane under a cover of water repellent polyester fibre; the ferrules are plastic, and the outer cover is fabric in limited categories.
Specifications
The ON4 drawing prints 42, 57 and 100 cm (420 x 570 x 1000 mm; axes not labelled on the drawing).
Story
A chair made for looking at a cartoon
B&B Italia says Caccia Dominioni drew on classic Italian garden decor, frescoes from ancient Rome and Renaissance painting. The result, in the maker's words, is a harmony of curves that defines the seating with delicate armrests and legs.
Villa Il Nonaro
The description adds a memory of a garden chair in the 18th-century family Villa Il Nonaro in Varese. Nonaro today is a collection of garden furniture with generously upholstered cushions.
