Description

Overview

Lepal is a 2024 lounge chair by Doshi Levien. Arper builds its identity around the contrast between a shaped outer shell, a soft cushioned interior and a slender angled base.

Construction

Article 7701 uses a powder-coated aluminium base with height-adjustable glides. Its shell combines a wraparound polyurethane outer panel with inner cushions. The collection supports single- or bi-material upholstery, while the alternative article 7702 uses a solid-wood base.

Specifications

  • Representative article: 7701 metal-base lounge chair
  • Largest drawing values, not labelled with axes: 65.5 × 78.5 × 103.5 cm
  • Upholstery and internal components assembled without glue
  • Product designed for disassembly, recovery and recycling

Story

Personal space through enclosure

Doshi Levien developed Lepal as a sculptural place of retreat. The high curved back and layered interior create enclosure without turning the chair into a closed compartment, supporting both upright sitting and a more relaxed posture.

Contrast as the organizing idea

Arper describes Lepal through dualities: hard shell and soft seating, sturdy support and visual lightness, geometric structure and a cushioned interior. The adhesive-free assembly and separable components extend that contrast into the construction, pairing a substantial form with a system intended to come apart.
