Description

Overview

Fumoir is a sofa from the Poltrona Frau collection by Renzo Frau. The page calls it an historic piece that revisits the elegant living room set introduced to the 1920s catalogue as models 118 and 518. The page and the product sheet both describe it as reduced in size, which they connect with an agile and versatile use.

Construction

The supporting structure is seasoned beech and the suspension of the seat consists of biconical steel springs, bound by hand and anchored to jute belts. The padding is rubberised horsehair. The back carries diamond-pattern stitching with leather-covered buttons, and a row of leather-covered pins finishes the back and the sides. The front feet have brass wheels, and the sheet gives the feet as beech wood with a dark walnut stain, number 05.

Story

A 1920s model, revisited

According to the page, Renzo Frau took his inspiration from the 18th-century tub armchair with a low backrest, which suits the upright posture people adopt around a table or in a waiting room. The sofa and the armchair of the Fumoir range are recognisable, the page says, by the lack of a separate backrest cushion and by their strongly reduced size.

First produced in 1929

The product sheet states that the Fumoir collection was first produced in 1929, a few years after the death of Renzo Frau, and that it was one of the first products taken in hand and developed by Savina Pisati Frau. The sheet describes it as a numbered series with a plate made in 24 kt galvanic dipped gold.
