Construction
HAY says two moulded oak-veneered plywood shells form the chair's shape. They carry upholstery in fabric or leather, and powder-coated steel legs hold them up. Each of the four variant pages names a black powder-coated steel base with four legs, standard gliders, and a seat and back in water-based lacquered oak veneer.

Story
From a university commission to HAY
HAY's Phaidon-book page quotes Jonathan Levien on how Dapper began: an idea for a plywood chair with two shells, an upholstered pad and a steel frame. He says that once the plans were finalised, HAY delivered the chair within six months.
A chair for laptop work
HAY's product page says Dapper was originally designed for use in a London university, and links the extra wide backrest and the elbow support to work on a laptop.
