Interlocking construction
Capelli Stool uses two identical moulded plywood components that lock together without tools or fasteners. The crossing surfaces between the finger-like upper sections stop the halves and hold the assembled stool in place. The two parts separate again for compact storage.
Material and dimensions
Each component combines alternating stained hardwood inner plies with a light ash veneer. The assembled stool measures 15.5 in wide, 13.25 in deep, and 17 in high. It may function as a seat or side table.
Story
Folded hands and flowing hair
Carol Catalano's folded hands inspired the interlocking construction, while the Italian word capelli, meaning hair, supplied the name. The undulating upper edges turn the image of crossing fingers into the connection between the two parts.

Assembly without hardware
When the stool is not needed, its halves unlock and stack for storage. Reassembly requires fitting the finger-like sections together; Herman Miller states that no tools or fasteners are required.
