Construction
The tables list oak wood for the leg and the shell in the veneer version, with a stained finish in black and a matt gloss (3-15 GU); the American Walnut Oiled and Oak Oiled bases are listed as walnut and oak wood in natural colour. GUBI describes the chair as having voluminous, vigorous legs set against a seat in a lighter material such as cane, straw or fabric.
Specifications
GUBI's drawings of the veneer version mark 41 cm wide, 53 cm deep and 79 cm high (16.1 x 20.9 x 31.1 in). The tables give a weight of 4.2 kg (9.3 lb) for the veneer chair and 5.3 kg for the cane and paper cord chairs.
Story
Designed out of necessity in 1947
GUBI says the C-Chair was created out of necessity to fit the new sizes of homes built at the end of the Second World War, where Gascoin made up for the lack of space with simple, functional furniture. The chair stands for the aesthetic and practical power of his designs and for the social conscience he showed through the post-war years in France.
Modern lines and wood craft
The page says the quality of the chair shows in modern lines, sobriety and high-quality wooden workmanship, and describes an elegant shape with a sturdy construction rooted in a simple, minimal and strong design language.
