Bézier

Overview

Studio MK27's Bézier for Minotti is a system of organic seating elements that combine without limit, with irregular volumes and fluid shapes. A lumbar cushion runs the full length of the backrest, and the seat is built from layers of high-density polyurethane in different thicknesses. Elements can stretch into islands, and the range adds ottomans and the Paolina armchair.

Construction

Plywood carries variable-density polyurethane foam, wrapped in quilted polyester fibre laminated to cotton. Backrest cushions are channelled goose down, and quick set-and-release closures join the backrests to the base. Tubular metal feet are varnished matt Dark Brown. In fabric and leather alike, the upholstery is completely removable.

Specifications

The double-depth sofa, 297x171 cm, is drawn at 297 cm wide, 171 cm deep and 84 cm high, with the seat at 41 cm and a 66 cm reading in the side view. Minotti points out that an element's total height depends on its own height plus the type of cushions fitted. The wood components are FSC certified.

Curves after Niemeyer

The system comes from Studio MK27, whose founder Marcio Kogan is known, says Minotti, for precise lines. Kogan cites the master Oscar Niemeyer: "The entire universe is made of curves". The collection salutes Brazilian modernism and the freedom of a curve taken from nature.

From mathematics to a sofa

Minotti describes the project as a tribute to the meeting of mathematics and art, drawing on Pierre Bézier, whose parametric curve is widely used in computer graphics and stands for precision and the fluidity of organic form.
