Description

Overview

The Aston sofa by Rodolfo Dordoni is a compact sofa from Minotti's 2014 Collection. Its back wraps around the seating and carries the curve on into the armrest, and Minotti says it is meant to set a tone of style and elegance in residential and hospitality settings.

Construction

A metal structure with elastic webbing rich in natural rubber supports the seat. The back is cased in fire-resistant polyurethane foam with an extra Memory Foam insert of variable density; the seat is variable-density foam topped with a light down quilt. All cushions are channelled goose down. The feet are moulded die-cast aluminium, polished anti-fingerprint Pewter, with Hytrel glides.

Specifications

  • Sofa CM 167: W 167 x D 95 x H 75 cm (height not labelled on the drawing)
  • Fabric covers detach completely; leather covers are fixed

Story

A back that becomes the arm

Minotti's own wording for the sofa is an enveloping back that extends its curve to form the armrest. The shape is lifted from the floor on Pewter-coloured cast aluminium feet, which the page says underscore the fine design qualities.

A residence in Toorak

The Aston page shows a private residence in Melbourne, in the Toorak quarter. The interior project grew out of close cooperation between the architects Nixon Tulloch Fortey, Minotti London and the client, Jack Merlo, who heads a well-known landscape architecture firm.
