Biography

Background

Sacha Lakic was born in Belgrade, Serbia, in 1964 and moved to Paris as a child. His father was a stylist and fashion designer who worked for Givenchy, Nina Ricci and Pierre Cardin, and taught him about colour and proportion. A love of cars and motorcycles began at the age of ten. He interned at Peugeot in 1985, worked for vehicle designer Alain Carré from 1986, and later became head of motorcycle design at MBK-Yamaha. In 1994 he founded his own agency, Sacha Lakic Design, in Paris; it moved to Luxembourg in 2010.

Signature Style

Roche Bobois describes Lakic as a designer passionate about cutting-edge technology whose pieces are distinguished by soft, fluid and dynamic forms. His furniture aims to convey aerodynamic motion - in his words, "frozen movement" - and he strips away extraneous detail so that each piece keeps a smooth, sculptural quality. He has said that emptiness is part of the design and that space must be allowed to breathe.

Notable Works

For Roche Bobois, with whom he has collaborated since the mid-1990s, he designed the Onda line, the Synopsis and Scenario sofas, the Speed Up series and the Bubble sofa (2014), which won a Gold award at the 2015 Luxembourg Design Awards. In vehicles he designed the Voxan Roadster, the Venturi Fétish electric sports car, the solar-assisted Venturi Eclectic, the Venturi Volage and the Voxan Wattman electric motorcycle, and he founded the custom motorcycle brand Blacktrack Motors.

Legacy

Lakic is one of the few designers who moves freely between automotive design and furniture. The Bubble sofa, now an iconic Roche Bobois piece, carries his pursuit of organic lines into homes worldwide, while his electric-vehicle work for Venturi helped give early electric mobility a distinctive design language.
