Biography
Background
Masanori Umeda is an author whom Edra places close to the sphere of design while also describing his work as strongly poetic. The saved Edra page says he was born in Kanagawa, Japan. He moved to Milan in 1966, where he worked in the studio of the Castiglioni brothers and won the 1st Braun prize. He later continued at the Olivetti studio with Ettore Sottsass before joining the radical group Memphis.
Studio and Edra
Umeda returned to Japan in 1980 and founded Umeda Design Studio Inc. in Tokyo. Edra records his debut with the company in 1990, when he produced a small number of pieces with strong symbolic value. The page associates those works with a Japanese spirit and with the values of elegance and respect.
Flowers
Umeda describes himself as a magical old man who gives birth to flowers, hoping that a flower can transform a sad environment into a happy one. This idea connects his biography on Edra's author page with the flower-like products the manufacturer credits to him.
