Herman Studio

Background

Herman Studio is the furniture design practice of Jonas Herman Pedersen, a Danish-based furniture designer. According to the studio, Jonas Herman understands the world through materials and what he makes from them. He works with machines and experts, his own hands and quality materials, and takes an experimental approach to building and construction. Clients listed by the studio include Form & Refine, Flexa, Ferm Living, FBD and Skagerak.

Signature Style

The studio puts the design and rethinking of the load-bearing construction at the core of its practice. Dialogue and trial and error are part of the process: finding out what works, what suits everyday use and needs, and how to balance function, aesthetics and new approaches. Its aesthetic comes from a fascination with natural wood. Chairs are Herman's 'forever love', the most complicated furniture type to make, where experience, craftsmanship, technique and knowledge come together.

Notable Works

For ferm LIVING the studio designed the Herman Chair, which ferm LIVING says Herman Studio introduced in 2013 and which became the forefather of the Herman series, as well as the Herman Lounge Chair, Hemi Lounge Chair and Bau Pot. For Form & Refine it created pieces including the Blueprint Chair, Lunar Chair, Beam series, A Line storage collection and Foyer Coat Stand. Other work includes the Popsicle series for Flexa and the Orbit and Sway Lounge Chair for Karup Design.

Legacy

The studio's recognition includes a German Design Award (Gold) for the Blueprint Chair (2021), a Red Dot Award for the Flexa Popsicle series (2017) and an FSC Award for the Extrude wardrobe (2008). It has also exhibited at The Cabinetmakers' Autumn Exhibition in 2013, 2019, 2020 and 2021.
