Harry Bertoia
ハリー・ベルトイア（1915〜1978年）は、イタリア・ポルデノーネ近郊のサン・ロレンツォに生まれ、15歳のときにデトロイトへ移住しました。カス工業高校とデトロイト芸術工芸学校で学んだのち、クランブルックに自身の金属工房を開設し、ジュエリーと金属工芸を指導しました。1940年代にはカリフォルニアでチャールズ＆レイ・イームズとともに、合板の積層成形と曲げ加工に取り組みました。

作風
彼は総合芸術家でした。ノール社の歴史研究家ブライアン・ルッツは、「彼の絵画は彫刻より優れ、彫刻は家具より優れ、家具は間違いなく見事だった」と評しています。ベルトイアはロッドとワイヤーに優雅さを見出し、溶接したスチールの格子で造形を包み込むように形作りました。その後は彫刻において光、音、ヴォリュームを探究し、「ソナンビエント」を生み出しました。

レガシー
1950年、ハンス＆フローレンス・ノール夫妻に招かれ、ペンシルベニアに金属工房を立ち上げ、自由に実験する環境を与えられました。彼が手がけた家具シリーズはわずか1つですが、20世紀デザインの偉大な業績の一つとして世界的に認められ、今日まで継続生産されています。2005年には「アシンメトリック・シェーズロング」が加わりました。
