Biography
Background
Erik Jørgensen (1928-1998) was a Danish saddler and upholsterer who founded the furniture workshop Erik Jørgensen Møbelfabrik in Svendborg on Funen in 1954. The company's history page calls him a preferred collaborator among the innovative upholsterers of his generation, and Fredericia says his knowledge of materials and market trends led him to design several sofa collections.
Signature Style
His own designs are upholstered sofas. The company describes them as minimalistic and comfortable, and Fredericia sums up the house approach as simple composition, precise craftsmanship details and classic design made with innovative techniques.
Notable Works
- EJ 220 sofa, designed in 1970 according to the manufacturer's sheet, with a low box, narrow armrests and a fully padded back
- EJ 270, named together with the EJ 220 on the company history page
As a manufacturer he also produced Hans J. Wegner's Ox chair, which Wegner brought to him in 1988 and which launched in Milan the following year, and Poul M. Volther's Corona chair.
Legacy
After his death in 1998 his sons Niels and Ole Jørgensen took over the firm. Fredericia Furniture acquired it later, and the two brands are marketed separately.
