Biography
Background
David Geckeler is an industrial designer based in Berlin who works across furniture, interior, tableware and lighting, as Muuto describes him. Muuto's Nerd stories call him a German designer with a studio in Berlin. In 2013 he and Frank Michels established the Berlin design studio Geckeler Michels, whose own site lists him as one of its two editors.
Signature Style
The Nerd Chair came from a wish to give the traditional wooden chair a new vision while rethinking what veneer can do. Geckeler describes the design as nerdy in the sense of being a bit strange, modern and different, yet holding the qualities of timelessly relevant design through a calm, well-proportioned silhouette and pleasing curves.
Notable Works
His studio's project list dates Nerd, a chair and barstool collection for Muuto, to 2011. Muuto says the Nerd Chair won the Muuto Talent Award in 2011, with the Nerd Bar Stool joining it in 2013, and the product page adds that Geckeler was honoured with Becker's International Design Award in 2011 for it.
Legacy
Together with Michels he leads a research-led practice that works on furniture, lighting, products and spaces, runs its own in-house studies and creative direction for clients, and also produces editions and one-offs.
