Biography
Background
Cristián Mohaded was born in Recreo, Catamarca, Argentina, in 1980, and, according to his studio, grew up among people who made things: his mother wove, his grandmother painted watercolours and the old artisans of his town worked in the street fair. He studied industrial design at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba and founded Mohaded Studio in Buenos Aires in 2008.
Signature Style
His own site describes a hybrid practice in which crafts, industry, tradition and innovation coexist, and a research-driven laboratory focused on material investigation that starts from the Latin-American craft tradition. Molteni&C says his work moves between design and art, combining contemporary language with respect for material heritage, and that he has collaborated with Argentine artisans on traditional crafts, local materials and production techniques.
Notable Works
The studio lists collaborations with Loro Piana, Louis Vuitton, CC-Tapis, Roche Bobois, Moooi and Molteni&C, among others. For Molteni&C he designed the Corsetto armchair of 2026; Pin-Up reports that it is one of his first projects produced in series with an industrial manufacturer, after around ten prototypes.
Legacy
Molteni&C lists the Premio Konex 2012–2022 (Visual Arts), the 2026 ELLE Decor International Designer of the Year award, solo exhibitions at the Museo Nacional de Arte Decorativo (2021) and the Museo Emilio Caraffa (2023), and permanent collections at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Arts and Design and the Denver Art Museum.
