Biography
Background
Chris Liljenberg Halstrøm is a furniture designer and textile artist, born in 1977, who lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark and Moheda, Sweden. She established her studio in 2007 after graduating from the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen, with prior studies in Stockholm and Berlin. Fritz Hansen describes her as a Danish/Swedish furniture designer with a Swedish mother and a Danish father.
Signature Style
Her own biography says she works mainly with furniture and smaller objects for the home and always starts from everyday situations, taking up familiarity, openness and anonymity as topics. Fritz Hansen adds that her Nordic roots show in a minimalistic approach and in natural materials such as wood, leather and wool, and that function is the starting point that dictates the idiom of her designs.
Notable Works
- Vent stool and bench for Fritz Hansen, first made for the Cabinetmakers' Autumn Exhibition 2015
- Vester chair, originally made for Svinkløv Badehotel (2019), named Furniture of the Year 2020 at the Design Awards
- Georg Ten Years, a 2023 exhibition at the Fritz Hansen Showroom listed on her site
Legacy
Her awards include the Red Dot Award (2014), the German Design Award (2016 and 2017), Designer of the Year at the Design Awards (2020) and the Finn Juhl Prize (2022). She has exhibited at the Vitra Design Museum, Triennale Milano and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, and since 2019 has focused mainly on textile art.
