Biography
Background
The Centro Ricerche Giorgetti — presented on Giorgetti's website as Giorgetti R&D — is the in-house research and development centre of Giorgetti, the furniture company founded in Meda, Italy, in 1898. Giorgetti calls it the heart of the company for over 120 years: a synergy of research and development that works in close contact with the company's external architects and designers.
Signature Style
Its work centres on materials of excellence — predominantly natural and noble ones such as solid wood, fabrics, leathers and hides and marble, but also glass, ceramics and metals, and innovative synthetics such as EVA rubber for outdoor use. Technical knowledge, creativity and coherence with Giorgetti's identity define its approach.
Notable Works
In 1987 the R&D Center created Progetti, the armchair and sofa series with a pau ferro handle inspired by an antique walking stick, later extended with Progetti Blossom, Progetti Fashion and a Progetti Special Edition. Giorgetti also credits it with pieces including Annette, Aphira, Flamingo, Kimé, the GK.01–GK.03 kitchens, Griffe, Domus, Alisea, Summa, Woody and Rift.
Legacy
Progetti remains, in Giorgetti's words, an icon of the company, and the R&D centre continues to shape new collections alongside the external designers Giorgetti works with.
