Collection Story
Origin
Charles and Ray Eames spent years working out how to mould plywood in three dimensions into seat shells that follow the body. Vitra dates the Plywood Group 1945/1946 and credits it to Charles & Ray Eames.
Design Language
The group pairs moulded plywood seats and backs with different bases. Vitra attributes the comfort of these light, compact chairs to the organic shell and a slightly flexible backrest, and says they are comfortable even without upholstery.
