Pix

Origin

Pix is a lamp collection that Simon Legald designed in 2023 for Normann Copenhagen. It was introduced in February 2023 as a reinterpretation of the archetypal spherical pendant, with a surface that comes from recycled plastic waste. The first release was four pendants. In July 2023 the collection grew with four ceiling and wall versions in the same four diameters, so the same globe is now offered for hanging, for the ceiling and, in the two smaller sizes, for the wall.

Design Language

The shade starts as plastic waste in several whites that is mixed and ground to granules. Every lampshade therefore has its own colour composition, along with a pixelated, granular texture. The globe is a familiar shape that blends into the surrounding interior, while the distinctive shade gives a cozy, charismatic glow. The material is thick, so the lamp looks opaque while it is off. Once the light is on the shade turns translucent and moon-like, and the bulb picks out the granulated structure. Because the material can go back through heating and be reused with its properties unchanged, the collection has a circular life cycle.

Construction

The lampshades are made by rotational moulding from LDPE and PE. The pendants hang on a 4 m fabric cord in white with a white canopy, and the socket is aluminium. The maximum load is 10 W. The ceiling and wall versions have a silver-painted steel canopy that can be fitted to a wall or a ceiling. They can be hardwired to the power outlet or connected by a power cord led out of an opening on the canopy's side, and a silicone plug seals that opening when the lamp is hardwired. The two larger ceiling versions, Ø45 and Ø60, are recommended for ceiling use only.
