Description
Overview
The Heracleum II Suspended is the second generation of Bertjan Pot's LED pendant for Moooi, which first appeared in 2010 and takes its name from the Heracleum plant. White leaves, which are lenses, branch from slender stems into what Moooi called a very technical yet natural structure. The pendant was offered in two sizes, Large and Small, and two colours, Nickel and Copper. It has since been superseded by the Heracleum III family.
Construction
The structure is a metal wire frame with polycarbonate lenses, hung on an ultra-thin suspension wire. Instead of conventional wiring, the lamp is powered through Electrosandwich by Marcel Wanders: conductive layers coated onto the frame carry the current to the LEDs, so the frame is the conductor. Moooi said this was not possible with normal wires. Each leaf can be repositioned by rotating it around its stem.

Story
The second generation
The first Heracleum, the Suspended, was introduced by Moooi in 2010, and its reception led to The Big O and Endless variants. Heracleum II then brought a new LED that Moooi described as much more efficient, with a unique and sparkling illumination.
Why it was thin
Pot's idea needed many LEDs lit at once without a tangle of soldered wires. The Electrosandwich coating, proposed by Marcel Wanders, let the frame itself carry the current, which kept the branches slender.
