Collection Story

Origin

The years 1964/1968 and the credit Charles & Ray Eames head Vitra's family page for the Eames Tables. Vitra places the first ideas for the table base in the 1940s, when the Eameses worked on early versions suited to many chairs and tables and showed their habit of thinking in systems. The bases made today date from the 1960s and came out of the work on the Soft Pad Chairs.

Design Language

Vitra names rational construction and aesthetic understatement as the family's marks, and says the tables have long supported communication, teamwork and interaction in offices, public spaces and homes. Power and data solutions and wireless charging are available.

The family has two parts: the large Segmented Tables and the smaller Contract Tables. According to the fact book the segmented system began in 1964 as a set of base elements for many table sizes and shapes, with six standard sizes in the Meeting range and customised solutions on request. A spreader connector holds the base elements together, which Vitra says gives the whole range its modularity.
