Brand Story
Heritage
Maruni Wood Industry traces its origins to Showa Mageki Kojo (Showa Bentwood Factory), founded in Hiroshima in 1928 by Takeo Yamanaka, who grew up on Miyajima and trained as a mechanical engineer. The company mastered bentwood working, took the name Maruni Wood Industry in 1933, and became one of the first Japanese firms to industrialise furniture making through division of labour rather than relying solely on artisans' hand skills.
Philosophy
Maruni works under the concept of "Industrialized Craftsmanship": refining its development skills to give physical form to good designs and perfecting the technology to mass-produce them. Its vision is to keep making wood furniture recognised as a global standard 100 or more years into the future, fusing a Japanese sensibility for the delicate with technical craftsmanship.
Iconic Works
After decades as Japan's leading maker of classic Western-style furniture, Maruni launched the nextmaruni project in 2004 with international designers. In 2008 it released the HIROSHIMA series with Naoto Fukasawa, shown at the Milan Salone in 2009 and now supplied worldwide.

Today
Since 2010 Naoto Fukasawa has been art director of the Maruni Collection, joined by Jasper Morrison in 2011 and Cecilie Manz in 2022. Furniture is made at the company's factory in the mountains of Hiroshima and distributed through dealers worldwide.
