Herman Miller
United Statesハーマンミラーの起源は、1905年にミシガン州ジーランドで設立された Star Furniture Co. にさかのぼります。1923年、ダーク・ヤン・デプリーとその義父ハーマン・ミラーが株式の大半を取得し、社名を Herman Miller Furniture Company に改めました。大恐慌の時代、デプリーはモダニズムのデザイナーであるギルバート・ローデに依頼し、同社は復刻家具から離れていきました。

理念
ハーマンミラーは、その存在意義を「人類の幸福のためにデザインすること」と表現しています。姿勢と人間工学に関する研究を、一流のデザイナーとの協働と結びつけており、2004年の「Perfect Vision」プログラム以来、サステナビリティの目標を追求してきました。その一環として、ベストセラーチェアに海洋流出プラスチックを採用しています。
象徴的な作品
デザインディレクターのジョージ・ネルソンの下で、同社はノグチテーブル、イームズ・ラウンジチェア＆オットマン、マシュマロソファ、イームズ・アルミナム・グループを生み出しました。ハーマンミラー・リサーチ・ディビジョンは、オフィス用パーテーションの原型となった Action Office II を発表し、1994年にはビル・スタンプとドン・チャドウィックがアーロンチェアをデザインしました。

現在
2021年に Knoll を買収したのち、同社は MillerKnoll となり、Design Within Reach、HAY、Muuto、Maharam、NaughtOne もグループに加わりました。ハーマンミラーは、2016年の Aeron、2014年の Mirra 2 など、定番製品の現代的なリマスター版を引き続き展開しています。
