Description

Overview

Richard Meier & partners Architects designed the West Coast armchair for the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. A rigid wooden shell and the formal rigour of the sides are set against the soft seat cushions.

Construction

  • Shell: wooden backrest and sides; the armchair sits directly on the floor
  • Seat: a wooden panel under the seat, padded with polyurethane foam rated fire-resistant that keeps its shape; the seat tips up on its own, hinged on noise-damping nylon
  • Upholstery: handmade throughout; with fabric, velvet or Pelle Frau® Color System leather
  • Installation: in rows; the metal bases, finished in epoxy powder paint, sit hidden inside the sides

Story

Drawn for the Getty Museum

West Coast was designed by Richard Meier & partners Architects for the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Its look is elegant and contemporary, built on the contrast between a rigid wooden shell with sides of formal rigour and the soft cushions of the seat.

Made for rows

The armchair stands directly on the floor and is installed in rows, fixed through metal bases hidden inside the sides.
