Description

Side-chair configurations

Sayl Side Chairs pair an upholstered, foam-padded seat with a choice between elastomer suspension and a fully upholstered back. Herman Miller offers four-leg and sled bases, with fixed arms or without arms.

Four-leg and sled bases

The four-leg version stacks four high and may use glides or casters. The sled-base version is offered with or without glides. Both versions share the same two back treatments.

Dimensions

For the four-leg chair with arms, the official price-book drawing labels a 24 in width and 34.25 in height.

Story

Removing material

Herman Miller asked Yves Béhar for an affordable chair that retained ergonomic performance, engineering quality and environmental responsibility. For the side chair, the development team hollowed structural components to reduce material volume and produce a lightweight design.

A back without a perimeter frame

Béhar looked to suspension-bridge engineering while developing Sayl. The resulting elastomer suspension can vary its tension across the back, while the side-chair programme adds four-leg and sled bases, two back treatments and optional arms.
