Description
Overview
The S 32 V is the cantilever chair without armrests by Marcel Breuer (artistic copyright Mart Stam). Thonet's page gives 1929/30 and says Breuer designed the S 32 and its armrest version S 64 during his time in Berlin in 1928; Thonet has produced both since 1930. Seat and backrest are bent solid wood with Vienna wickerwork on a tubular steel frame.
Construction
The S 32 V has a chrome-plated tubular steel frame and a seat and backrest of solid wood with canework and a supporting synthetic mesh. Thonet's online shop describes the pre-configured version with beech stained black (TP 29) and POM plastic glides. The same programme includes the S 32 N with mesh, the upholstered S 32 PV and the S 32 SPV and SPVN with an upholstered seat.
Specifications
- Dimensions (S 32 V): W 46 cm x D 58 cm x H 82 cm
- Seat height / weight: 45 cm, 5.8 kg
Story
Breuer and Thonet
Thonet's history page says an agreement between Thonet and Marcel Breuer for a tubular steel programme was signed in 1928, and that Thonet acquired Breuer's company Standard Möbel the following year. The 1930/31 card catalogue presents the models Breuer designed for Thonet, including the S 32 / S 64.
New and old
For the design Breuer used tubular steel together with Thonet's typical materials, bentwood and wicker cane, and the curved frame refers back to classic bentwood furniture. In Thonet's words the bent solid wood with wickerwork represents tradition, and the frame the present and future.
