Overview
The Rohde Paldao Table is a freeform coffee and side table designed by Gilbert Rohde and reissued by Herman Miller; the official store dates its debut to 1941.
Construction
The top is wood veneer on an MDF core in burl oak, burl walnut or ebony, raised on tapered wood legs.
Specifications
The coffee table measures 44.2 in wide, 44.2 in deep and 15 in high; the two side tables are 27 by 22 in and 24 in or 19 in high.
Story
Organic modernism
Herman Miller presents the Paldao Table as a product of the abstract art movement, with a curvy freeform outline that appeared in the company's first showroom design and in mural graphics. It was designed toward the end of Rohde's career and is returning after more than eighty years.
Burl and craft
The company says Rohde drew on 1940s modern art while designing the table, and chose a burl wood cut so that honest materials and simple function stayed central.
