Description

Overview

The Random Light II is Moooi's updated version of Bertjan Pot's Random Light, a suspension lamp whose shade is a sphere of randomly coiled fibre. Moooi describes it through simplicity, lightness and a touch of magic. The production method leaves every shade unique, not completely round, but transparent and delicate. The page lists Small, Medium and Large models; the documented Small measures Ø50 × H50 cm.

Construction

The shade is a sphere of fiberglass with epoxy resin on a chromed steel pendant. Resin-drained yarn is coiled at random around an inflatable ball to create a translucent three-dimensional fabric. After deflation, the ball is removed through the round opening and the shade is left to dry. Its open texture plays with shadow while the lamp emits a soft glow.

Product passport

Moooi's passport for the Medium model states the Netherlands as its country of origin. The current product page offers the documented finish as White.

Story

Born from an experiment

The Random Light was Bertjan Pot's first design for Moooi and, like all his work, began as a material experiment for an interior object. In 2001 Moooi founder and art director Marcel Wanders, curating the brand's first collection, saw a clever experiment that put a smile on his face. After three years of perfecting the production process, the Random Light joined the collection and became an instant icon. Pot preferred to deliver his first lamp personally: it did not fit his car, so he cycled to the station and took the train, needing two seats for the shade.

Random Light II

Twenty years on, Moooi and Bertjan Pot updated the design as part of the Moooi Originals programme, keeping the original idea at the centre while improving the user experience and extending the product's life cycle. The family also grew with the Random Floor Lamp, first introduced in 2010 and followed by the Random Floor Lamp II.
