Description
Four drawer chests
Progetti Compiuti is Cappellini's series of drawer chests by Shiro Kuramata. SIDE 1 and SIDE 2 date from 1970, SOLARIS from 1977, and PC_12 from 1970; PC_12 has 49 asymmetrical drawers and casters.
Materials and configurations
The main structure uses high-density fibreboard conglomerate panels and solid ash. SIDE 1, SIDE 2 and PC_12 combine black-stained ash structures with matt-lacquered drawers, rubber casters and brushed-steel knobs. SOLARIS has matching black-stained ash drawers, a painted metal base and black-painted metal knobs.
Representative dimensions
PC_3 measures 63 W x 50 D x 170 H cm.
Story
Kuramata's four-part series
Progetti Compiuti is an array of furnishing elements with drawers rather than a single fixed cabinet. SIDE 1 and SIDE 2 date to 1970 and use different curved profiles, while the 1977 SOLARIS and the rectilinear PC_12 extend the series into contrasting geometries.
Curves and grids
The series combines sinuous, soft lines with squared and geometric profiles. That contrast is expressed across the four configurations, from the tall curved chests to PC_12's grid of 49 asymmetrical drawers on casters.
