Description
Overview
Bookshelf is a two-sided module designed by Shiro Kuramata. Cappellini describes varying compartment sizes as a proportionate response to the objects placed inside.
Construction
The panels are matte lacquered white. Open compartments have different dimensions, giving the module an irregular internal rhythm. Its open arrangement keeps the storage visible from either face.
Specifications
The PC_7 drawing gives 252 cm width, 40 cm depth and 254 cm height. The module is intended to be read from both sides, with open compartments across its tall frame.
Story
Proportion and space
The Bookshelf page connects its varying compartments with Shiro Kuramata's idea that the volume of space required by each object should be proportionate to its dimensions. The two-sided format makes the module readable from both sides.
A white module
Cappellini specifies white matte lacquered panels. The saved sheet names PC_7 and gives a tall rectangular module with open compartments.
