Description
Overview
Petit Standard is a stackable chair designed by Daniel Rybakken for HAY. HAY describes it as the outcome of eight years of work, aimed at a chair whose stacking features improve its look instead of spoiling it. The frame is made of die-cast aluminium and steel tube joined into a three-dimensional triangle, and the oak-veneer seat and back add a natural counterpoint to its geometric outline.

The product fact sheet lists a moulded plywood seat and back with an inner veneer in beech and top and bottom veneers in oak, on a powder coated steel tube base with die-cast aluminium connectors. Plastic gliders are standard on every variant, and felt gliders for wooden floors are listed as an option. The wood is FSC 100% certified, and the chair is tested to EN 16139 level L2 for non-domestic seating.

Story
An eight-year journey
HAY presents Petit Standard as a study in precision and considered details. Rybakken set out to make a highly stackable chair in which the stacking features would strengthen the design, and the page describes the result as a fusion of elegance and function. The fact sheet gives 2020 as the design year.
Frame and shell
The steel tubes and cast aluminium connectors form the three-dimensional triangle that gives the chair its geometric silhouette, and the oak-veneer seat and backrest bring warmth and a natural quality to it. HAY adds that the high back and curved seat give comfort, while the rigid tubing supports strength and stackability.
On the product page, the designer tab places Petit Standard next to the Arbour collection, which Rybakken designed for HAY together with Andreas Engesvik.
