Description
Overview
The Pawson Drift Sofa Group is a sofa, sectional, lounge chair and ottoman designed by the architect John Pawson for Herman Miller. Plush cushions sit in a hardwood frame with a recessed base, which gives the sofa a floating effect.
Construction
A solid North American hardwood frame with joinery and square edges wraps around plant-based latex cushions with a down feather jacket. The cushions rest on a hidden suspension of textile straps under cotton decking.
Specifications
The sofa comes in 80 and 93 inch widths. The 80 inch sofa is 80 in wide, 40 in deep and 29.8 in high.
Story
A place for the family to gather
Herman Miller's page calls the Pawson Drift Sofa a spacious, deeply comfortable gathering place that gives the sitter a sanctuary for mind and body. John Pawson says he hoped to make a place for the family to gather and wanted it deep enough but with a strong form.

Seeming to float
Pawson says he was keen to make the sofa appear to float, so he lifted it off the floor with a hardwood frame and gave it exaggerated, soft and rounded cushions. He adds that natural materials have their own intrinsic quality of feeling right.
