Description
Overview
The Newson Aluminum Chair is Marc Newson's 2018 response to Knoll's cantilever-chair history. The stored MN01C is the armless version, with a die-cast aluminum frame and knitted mesh seat and back.
Construction
Three high-pressure castings form the main frame and two end caps. Polyester yarn gives the mesh its surface and colour; thermoplastic elastomer supplies structure. A fiberglass-reinforced nylon insert holds the back mesh.
Specifications
- MN01C armless: W 22.5 x D 23.75 x H 33 in (572 x 603 x 838 mm)
- Seat height 18 in
Story
Reversing the cantilever
Newson and Knoll design director Benjamin Pardo revisited Knoll seating by Mies van der Rohe. The Tugendhat Chair's reverse cantilever, rather than the Brno Chair, became the closer structural reference for the final design.

Aluminum in place of tube
The project reinterpreted tubular-steel construction through cast aluminum. Mechanical precision hides the joins between the three castings and maintains the chair's continuous profile.
