Overview
The Nelson Thin Edge Group brings George Nelson's practical approach to organization into a family of bedroom storage pieces. Herman Miller's current range includes variations of a double dresser, bedside table, and chest cabinet, all defined by the narrow edge that frames doors and drawers.
Construction
Solid-wood drawers run on soft slides. Slim aluminum legs lift the cases above the floor, while the cases use veneer surfaces and may have either a matte black back or a veneered back for freestanding placement.
Current forms
The bedside table combines a top surface with a drawer. The double dresser uses deep, wide drawers, and the chest cabinet combines drawers with shelves for storing objects of different sizes.
Story
From Storage Wall to Thin Edge
George Nelson's 1944 Storage Wall proposed thicker walls that could also hold household belongings. Herman Miller identifies that architectural idea as the forerunner of cabinet series Nelson developed later. The 1952 Rosewood Cabinet Series combined modular storage with an increased emphasis on craftsmanship. As veneers expanded and details became standardized, Herman Miller renamed the group in 1958 for the thin edge framing its doors and drawers. Those dates describe the group's development and naming, not a separately stated design year for the present range.
