Groundpiece Sofa

Overview

Groundpiece is Flexform's sectional sofa system by Antonio Citterio (2001). It is built from linear units, ottomans, armrests and loose cushions that are combined into compositions. The two-seat unit COD. 011M03 measures 200 × 97 cm with a back height of 56 cm and a seat height of 40 cm.

Construction

The seat elements have a metal structure with moulded polyurethane padding, covered with a protective laminated fabric; ottomans have a solid wood structure with polyurethane foam. Seat cushions are in sterilised goose down (Assopiuma certified, gold label) with a crushproof insert, or in polyurethane foam and Dacron; a Premium version uses goose down with a high-resilience crushproof insert. Backrest cushions are in goose down, with or without a polyurethane foam support bolster. Feet are in epoxy powder-coated metal resting on thermoplastic pads.

Specifications

Armrests come in three types: the padded 'Fabric 24' (metal) and 'Fabric 12' (solid wood), or a cowhide-clad metal console that works as a flat surface and can include shelves. The 240 cm unit 011M04 and 100–122 cm deep units 011M11 and 011M06 extend the system. Upholstery is removable in both fabric and leather versions.

The armrest as a surface

Flexform's page describes the armrest concept as redesigned: it can be padded and upholstered in fabric or leather, or it can be a metal console clad in cowhide that serves as a flat surface for accessories and carries shelves for objects of all kinds.

A system of units

The sofa is a system rather than a single piece. The technical sheet lists linear units 97 cm deep in widths from 80 to 240 cm and deeper 122 cm units in widths of 100 and 120 cm, and the compositions Flexform shows on the product page, such as codes 011MXB and 011MXC, combine them with ottomans, armrests and cushions.
