Description
Overview
Artona is an armchair that reaffirms design as a cultural act. Its solid wood structure has an understated presence, and the material becomes both expression and language: strong, authoritative, reliable and enduring.
Construction
The structure is solid wood and the seat is wood with polyurethane foam, with a fabric or leather cover. Two "L"-shaped elements serve as both support and armrest, while the backrest is the only soft gesture.
Specifications
Code 0ARTPL01 measures 73 x 60.5 x 65 cm (W x D x H).
Story
Rigour and comfort
Afra and Tobia Scarpa designed Artona in the mid-1970s. It balances rigour with comfort and protection with stability, and expresses those qualities simply by being present.
A micro-architecture of planes
The chair is imagined as a small architecture of vertical and horizontal planes. Two "L"-shaped elements work as support and armrest at once, and the backrest is the one soft gesture that tempers the geometry. Layered wood gives life to the surfaces and shows careful cabinet-making skill.
