Overview
Simon Legald designed Act Lamp for Normann Copenhagen as a pendant built from discarded PE water pipe scraps. This Ø80 version has an oval, see-through lampshade, and no two lamps share the same ring arrangement.
Construction
The shade is built from fused, oval-sliced pipe rings and is made by rotational molding in 100% PE-LD polyethylene industrial waste from recycled multilayer water pipes. The lamp has a white fabric cord, a white canopy and an E27 socket, and it weighs 7 kg.
Specifications
Ø80 x H60 cm (Act Lamp Ø80 EU White, 609802). Light source: E27, with a maximum load of 10 W LED.
Story
From pipe scraps to lampshade
Simon Legald saw potential in PE water pipes that are usually incinerated because their composition prevents reuse. He sliced the pipes diagonally into oval rings and fused them into a translucent lampshade, a process that minimizes energy use while preserving the material.
Oval form and cast shadows
The shade is see-through and casts shadows when lit, and the oval shape of the sliced rings is mirrored in the oval silhouette of the shade. Act Lamp was designed in 2024.
