Description
Overview
The 111 Navy Chair® is Emeco's version of its classic Navy chair made from recycled plastic bottles. Developed with Coca-Cola and launched in 2010, it is described by Emeco as the first ever chair made from recycled plastic bottles. It is made in Hanover, PA, built to stand up to tough use, and all colors are outdoor approved. An optional seat pad is available.
Construction
The chair is a tough, one-piece, scratch-resistant form made of 90% recycled PET — soft recycled plastic originally intended for short-lived fabric and textiles. Emeco states each chair is made from at least 170 waste plastic bottles, and that the chair is 100% recyclable by Emeco into a new chair of the same or a similar model. Standard glides are TPU plastic.

Story
A challenge from Coca-Cola
Emeco explains that PET, used in billions of plastic bottles every year, is probably the most common plastic on earth. In 2006 Coca-Cola approached Emeco to solve an environmental problem: "upcycling" waste plastic bottles into an iconic structural item made to last. Emeco took on the challenge, taking soft recycled PET plastic, originally intended for short-lived fabric and textiles, and working it into a tough, one-piece, scratch-resistant chair. The development required, in Emeco's words, both determination and patience, and the 111 Navy Chair was finally launched in 2010.
The opposite of disposable
The chair re-creates Emeco's Navy chair, first built in aluminum for the US Navy, in a new material. Emeco wants PET kept out of landfills and oceans and made into well-built chairs that stay in use. Owner Gregg Buchbinder described pioneering a brand new material and re-engineering a core product as a significant investment, worth it for the impact of using rPET from millions of bottles each year: "We’ve turned something many people throw away into something you want and keep for long, long time." The chair received a Good Design Award in 2010 and an iF Design Award in 2011.
