Biography
Background
Yngve Ekström (16 June 1913 – 13 March 1988) was a Swedish furniture designer, wood carver, sculptor and architect, born in Hagafors, Småland. His father died young and he started working in joineries in Vaggeryd at the age of 13, which gave him a unique feeling for materials and construction. In 1945 he co-founded ESE-möbler, later Swedese, with his brother Jerker and Bertil Sjöqvist, and worked there for over 40 years.
Signature Style
Ekström pursued simplicity and the perfect sitting curve, shaping bentwood and laminated veneer around the human body. "To have designed one good chair might not be a bad life's work," he said.
Notable Works
The armchairs Anders and Per (1945), Kurva and Båge (1953), Lamino and Laminett (1956), and later Primo, Melano and Lamello.
Legacy
Lamino was voted the Swedish furniture of the 20th century by Sköna hem readers in 1999 and has been in continuous production since 1956. His furniture is in permanent collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
