Biography
Background
Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894–1984) was a Danish architect and one of the originators of Danish modernism. Born in Slagelse, he graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture in 1921 and founded his own practice the following year — today Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects.
Signature Style
A pioneer of functionalism, he believed that "there is no life without aesthetics" and that architecture should be applied art for everyone. Many of his buildings were complete works in which he designed even the smallest details, from door handles to lamps and furniture, combining direct and diffuse light to shape spaces.
Notable Works
- Daells Varehus, Copenhagen (1928–35)
- Copenhagen Airport's first terminal, Kastrup (1937–39)
- Radiohuset (The Radio House), Frederiksberg (1936–41, inaugurated 1945)
- Vega – Folkets Hus (1956) and the Danish Embassy in Washington (1960)
- Lamps for Louis Poulsen, including the VL 45 Radiohus Pendant
Legacy
He received the Eckersberg Medal (1941) and the C.F. Hansen Medal (1954). His lamps for Radiohuset first appeared in Louis Poulsen catalogues in the mid-1940s and are still produced today.
