Biography

Background

Trix and Robert Haussmann are Swiss architects and designers who have worked internationally for more than four decades. Robert Haussmann (1931-2021) studied interior architecture at the School of Art and Design Zurich; Trix Haussmann (born 1933) studied architecture at ETH Zurich. They met at Expo 64 and, from 1967, worked together in the Allgemeine Entwurfsanstalt, the General Design Institute of Zurich.

Signature Style

Their approach is called critical mannerism: reviving lost traditions, carrying them forward and reinterpreting them with humour and irony. Their practice covers furniture and product design, architecture, interior design, colour design and urban construction.

Notable Works

  • Redesign of Zurich's main station
  • Galleria Hamburg
  • Haussmann 310 armchair (1962), reissued by Walter Knoll
  • Lamps and furniture in the spirit of critical mannerism

Legacy

Their work was honoured with the Swiss Grand Prix of Design in 2013, and the Haussmann 310 is counted among the icons of Walter Knoll.
