Biography
Background
Soo Chan is described on Poliform's designer page as a practicing architect based in Singapore, the founding principal and design director of SCDA Architects Pte Ltd, which he established in 1995. He was born in 1962 in Penang, Malaysia, and obtained his master of architecture degree at Yale University in 1987. He is a registered architect in Singapore and the United States, taught part-time at the National University of Singapore and was visiting professor at Syracuse University in fall 1998.
Signature Style
In Poliform's outdoor collection the catalogue characterises his Soori family by round forms, a relaxed look and a woven backrest. The Soori Day Lounge is presented as an intimate lounge setting with richly textured upholstery, and Soori Day as an outdoor lounge armchair that invites conversation.
Notable Works
Poliform lists the Soori Day Lounge, the Soori Day armchair and the Soori coffee tables as his products. Poliform says the practice's projects range from master planning and resorts to apartments, commercial and institutional buildings and private houses. The same page names the Lincoln Modern, honoured with a RIBA worldwide award in 2005, and the house in Malacca, highly commended at the AR+D 2002 World Emerging Architecture Awards.
Legacy
Poliform records that he won the inaugural President's Design Award as Singapore designer of the year 2006 and received the SIA-Getz Architecture Prize for emergent architecture in Asia in 2006. His practice was one of the design vanguard firms selected by Architectural Record in December 2003, and its work has been published in journals including Architectural Review, Architectural Record, Interni, Lotus, Monument and World Architecture.
