Rikke Frost

Background

Rikke Frost (born 1973) is a Danish industrial designer. Carl Hansen & Søn places her childhood interest in crafts and materials in the small Danish town of Bov; she trained as an industrial designer at the Aarhus School of Architecture, and Danish Wikipedia dates her graduation to 2000 and gives her birth as 22 May 1973 in Aabenraa. After several years in London as a designer and buyer for Heal & Son she returned to Denmark in 2004 and set up Rikke Frost Design.

Signature Style

The manufacturer says she builds her work on three words, minimal, magical and mindful, and that she combines different craft traditions and materials in organically styled sofas, tables, chairs and lamps, often with circular shapes. She considers production possibilities from the start and chooses materials, shapes and artisanal methods that adapt to modern production.

Notable Works

• The Sideways line for Carl Hansen & Søn: the RF1903 sofa, the RF1904 lounge chair, the RF1903F footstool and the RF1905 coffee table
• The 'Sway' rocking chair, which won the Boligmagasinet Design Award as readers' favourite in 2012
• The 'Filigree' handle, which received the German Design Award in 2018
• The children's furniture 'Bukki', winner of the DR programme series Danmarks næste klassiker in 2019 and later shown at Designmuseum Danmark

Legacy

Carl Hansen & Søn lists the Danish Design Award, Bolig Magasinet's Design Award, the German Design Award and the Design Award of Wallpaper magazine among her prizes, and says her work has been shown at the Cabinetmakers' Autumn Exhibition and at the Trapholt museum in Kolding. She also teaches courses at the Aarhus School of Architecture. In her own words: "Design must serve the purposes of the times we live in and far into the future"
