Biography

Background

Preben Fabricius was born in 1931 and passed away in 1984 at only 52 years of age. Walter Knoll's designer page says that after training as a carpenter in Copenhagen he studied under the interior designer Finn Juhl, where he met Jørgen Kastholm.

Signature Style

Walter Knoll places Fabricius with Kastholm among the leading Danish designers and within Danish modernism. Taking functionalism and consistency from Scandinavian design, the two Danish interior designers worked on form, material and ergonomics, and the page adds a Bauhaus influence.

Notable Works

With Kastholm, Fabricius developed the FK chair, which Walter Knoll calls an icon in design history and part of its Classic Edition. In 1969 the FK chair design was the first recipient of the German prize for "Good Form". On his own he designed the eponymous Fabricius, and the designer page lists the Fabricius Armchair, the Fabricius Side table and the Fabricius Sofa under his name.

Legacy

Walter Knoll describes the 1970s "Conversation Chair" as a classic that reveals a lot about the history of modern furniture. It combines the tradition of functional, Scandinavian design with the appeal of relaxed seating comfort and, in the maker's words, represents all of the ideals that Preben Fabricius stood for as a designer.
