Biography
Background
Philippe Starck and Sergio Schito are credited together on two Kartell armchair and chair designs. Kartell writes the credit "Philippe Starck con Sergio Schito" on its Italian and UK shop pages, and "Design Philippe Starck with Sergio Schito" on its data sheets. None of the Kartell pages says what each of the two contributed to a design, or gives a biography or a nationality for Sergio Schito.
Signature Style
Kartell's text describes the two shared designs in plain terms. Cara is a living room armchair that combines the rigour of classic lines with the comfort of the seat, marked by a large, high cushion. Catwalk is a chair for indoor and outdoor use that Kartell calls the essence of the classic seat. In the quotes Kartell prints with them, Starck speaks of the elegance of the minimum for Cara and of a chair of French and monarchic origins that resolves the paradox between humility and elegance for Catwalk.
Notable Works
- Cara, an armchair with a frame in batch-dyed polycarbonate and a fabric-covered polyurethane seat, listed on the sheets "CARA 2018" and "CARA OUTDOOR 2018".
- Catwalk and Catwalk Mat, a chair in recycled thermoplastic technopolymer, listed on the sheet "CATWALK MAT 2018".
Legacy
Kartell's presentation for the Salone del Mobile 2018 lists both Cara and Catwalk under this joint credit.
