Biography

Background

Nathan Yong is an industrial designer based in Singapore. He graduated from Temasek Polytechnic with a diploma in Industrial Design in 1991, began as a buyer and product developer sourcing from craftsmen across Asia, and in 1999 opened the retail store Air Division. He later completed a Master of Design at the University of New South Wales.

Signature Style

His designs start from simple visual memories of everyday life and are pared down with restraint, favouring the poetry of a product reached through research and engineering over superfluous detail.

Notable Works

Off Cut bookcase, Bolle low tables and Stack tables for Living Divani, which began working with him in 2009.

Legacy

Red Dot Concept Design Award winner in 2006 and 2007, Singapore President's Design Award Designer of the Year in 2008, and subject of a 20-year retrospective at the National Design Centre Singapore in 2019.
