Mathias Rasmussen

Background

Mathias Steen Rasmussen (born 1990) is a Danish designer and cabinetmaker. GUBI says he has a background in art and cabinetmaking and completed his apprenticeship in 2019 with the highest honours. He enrolled at the Jutland Art Academy in 2012, but found that his purpose lay in woodwork and in making objects for a specific use, which led him to furniture design.

Signature Style

His working philosophy is "honesty in construction": the design process stays open to what an object is made of and how it is built, and the grain of the wood and the joints are often left visible. He is a keen meditator who finds ideas when his mind is clear, starting from lines and curves that form a subtle geometry and then working out each construction detail.

Notable Works

• The MR01 Initial Lounge Chair, his debut piece for GUBI, in oak or walnut with a hand-woven rope seat and back
• An outdoor edition of the MR01 in iroko wood, shown at Milan Design Week 2023

Legacy

Rasmussen has his own studio and woodwork shop. GUBI presents him as a designer it hopes to build a common path with, integrating him into its narrative.
